I should have blogged this article by John Lukacs "The Triumph and Collapse of Liberalism" when it appeared three months ago.
I recommend this essay, but with one large reservation. Lukacs ignores the willingness of the Republican party to exploit white racism for its political purposes. There's one reference to affirmative action in the article, but it isn't explicitly tied to racial issues. Otherwise, that's it. Lukacs' article isn't limited to the U.S., of course, but race can't be omitted from the story of the collapse of liberalism in the United States.
This reluctance to address the role of race in the rise of the Republican party is increasingly common.
